GambleAware Commits To Funding Responsible Gambling Research Hub

BeGambleAware.orgGambleAware is looking to fight gambling addiction in the United Kingdom by leveraging many different tools. The problem gambling charity recently announced that it will pump in £4 million in funding to what will be the UK’s first academic research hub focused on gambling harm.

GambleAware will help fund the operation via grants. This is to be done every eight months and should help with the hub’s goal of researching ways to keep Brits safe from gambling harm. While GambleAware will pump in the bulk of the funds, the charity expects financial help to come in from other sources.

GambleAware interim research director Alison Clare said that this is the perfect time for a British university to come in and help out. Clare said field of gambling harm research is relatively untapped and there are a lot of opportunities for academics to look into gambling harm. The research hub will look at broadening the academic disciplines that look into gambling harm.

The results of the research could then be distributed to the wide network of agencies and organizations that can help handle gambling addiction in the UK. The hub will be based in one university, with several of them applying to be the main facility. The goal is to have the research hub work and coordinate with other universities so that research is made easier.

GambleAware is already encouraging applications from various fields of academic research for grants. This includes various disciplines such as mental health, public health, health economics, health inequalities, epidemiology, psychology and clinical health. All of these fields have areas that show how gambling can be harmful to people and how GamStop can be useful.

More Research

GambleAware has already been funding research into gambling harm for quite some time now. But the charity is now taking a more hands-on approach in its research goals. In the past, some of the smaller research projects it supported carried out their own research projects. The new research hub will come under the direction of GambleAware who will direct the focus of the research.

GambleAware has clear criteria when it comes to what university it is looking for to host its research hub. The charity is looking for universities that apply a multi-disciplinary; public health lens to their projects will be ideal candidates. GambleAware is already in discussion with several universities that fit the criteria and they expect some creative proposals to come in in the coming weeks.
